Tennessee 28 - Penn St. 21

Penn St. returned to Knoxville to play in the first night game ever played at Tennessee. It was also the first game played in newly expanded Neyland Stadium, as the Southwest upper deck had been completed.

A classic struggle between the two schools was tipped in Tennessee's direction when Condredge Holloway directed an 80-yard scoring march at a time when the situation was growing dimmest for the Vols. The record crowd of 71,647, watched contently as the Vols took advantage of Penn St. errors to roll up a 21-0 halftime lead, was dismayed as the Nittany Lions came back to cut the lead to 21-14 with the help of future Heisman Trophy winner John Cappaletti. Here, with disaster closing in, Holloway showed his athleticism and drove the Vols 80 yards to paydirt, culminating in a Haskel Stanback TD, his third of the day along with 101 yards rushing.

In a 29 game stretch between '70-'72, PSU went 27-2, with both losses being to UT in Knoxville, ultimately costing them a shot at the National Title. From '71-'73, Penn St. lost just 3 total games, the '71 & '72 Tennessee games being 2 of those 3.
