From pre-game ceremonies until the closing whistle, it was Bobby Majors Day at Neyland Stadium as the Vols' All-American Safety dominated play with electrifying kickoff and punt returns. A super performance by Majors, couples with overall brilliance by the defense, pinned Cotton Bowl-bound Penn St. with its first loss in 16 games.

The entire Majors family was honored before the game in recognition of the clan's continuing contribution to intercollegiate football. Then Bobby demonstrated to a national television audience the scope of that contribution when he returned tow punts for 82 yards, including one for a td, and rambled 113 yards with two kickoff returns.

Penn State's feared running attack, featuring Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris, was offset early when Conrad Graham grabbed off a fumble in the air and galloped 76 yards for a touchdown.

UT's Jackie Walker also got in on the action with a 43 yard interception for a td wrapping up the 31-11 win. The Vols would go on to beat Joe Fergeson and Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl and finish 10-2. The Lions would go on to win the Cotton and finish 11-1.
The game also featured a UT fraternity pledge running onto the field in full view of the ABC cameras and taking the ball 30 yards for a score into the South endzone.
