Tennessee 21 - Auburn 14

Three TD's for the #11 Vols and two TD's for #3 Auburn right? Wrong. Tennessee had the ground game clicking on a rainy day in Knoxville, rushing for a season high 350 yards. Reggie Cobb rambled for 225 and Chuck Webb took home 93 yards. UT got a safety in the first quarter as a high snap went over the Auburn punter's head for a 2-0 UT lead. In the second quarter, Cobb ran 79 yards down the East sideline for the first TD of the game and a 9-0 UT lead. Lightning struck Auburn twice as another bad snap sailed through the end zone for another UT safety in the second quarter and a 11-0 lead. The two teams would swap field goals before half and UT was up 14-3.

There was no scoring in the third period but it got interesting in the 4th. Auburn stunned the crowd with an 83-yard TD strike from Slack to Wright followed by a successful two point conversion that tightened things up at 14-11. UT would counter with a long sustained, game clinching drive, culminated by Chuck Webb (below) on an 8-yard TD run. Auburn got no closer than another field goal and UT won it the unorthodox way 21-14. UT would go on to an 11-1 season and win the Cotton (and finish in a three way tie with Auburn and Alabama for the SEC Championship). Auburn would finish 10-2 and beat Ohio State in the Hall of Fame Bowl.
