UCLA at Tennessee

Sept. 7, 1974 at Knoxville

If television's most imaginative writers had been turned loose to provide the script, they could scarcely have improved on the climax for the Tennessee-UCLA game beamed nationwide by ABC. The dramatic setting was established when Condredge Holloway darted from the dressing room to Coach Bill Battle's side in the fourth quarter after missing the previous two periods because of a painful shoulder bruise. Vol QB Pat Ryan failed to produce any points for the Vols in his 2+ quarters of play while Holloway was out.

Applying his flair for making the impossible look easy, Holloway returned to action and guided the Vols 80 yards to a tying touchdown. He ran the final 12 yards himself, or rather ran 10 and dived two, landing on his head as he turned a flip in the endzone.

Aside from adding a new chapter to a series replete with exciting finishes, the Vol defense had two goal line stands in the game that featured Vol sophomore Andy Spiva. UCLA's QB John Sciarra helped the Bruins put up some 500+ total yards for head coach Dick Vermeil.
