Johnny Majors, an All-America tailback for the Vols in the mid-fifties, returned to his alma mater after guiding Pitt to a national championship in 1976.

Tennessee passed on Majors in 1970, despite his remarkable job at Iowa St. He guided the Cyclones to back-to-back bowl appearances in '71 and '72.
