The "T" on the helmet made it's debut in 1964.

The only significant change in this period came in 1965, when a black cross was placed inside the "T" in honor of 3 coaches killed in a train wreck in mid-season.
This original version of the "T" lasted from '64-'66 when it was modified for the '67 season.

The "T" itself remained the same from '67-'76. However, in 1973, the Vols wore a double stripe on the helmet for the final three games of the regular season vs Ole Miss, Kentucky and Vandy.

When Johnny Majors took over in 1977, the "T" was thickened, the stripe was widened but gray facemasks remained. This version of the "T" and stripe have remained unchanged since.

The last major modification to the helmet came in 1983, when white facemasks were added. The helmet has remained unchanged since that season.

For the 1992 season a clover with "TIM" written across it was placed on the back of the helmet in honor of long time trainer Tim Kerin, who had passed away suddenly the summer before that season.

The only other seasonal change to the helmet was in '98 when the NCAA pennant logo was put on the back of the helmet. It has remained since.

The American Flag was placed on the back of the helmet for the '01 LSU game, following the 9/11 attack, and has remained since.

For the 2004 season opener against UNLV, Tennessee wore the 1971-1973 road throwback jersey, including that time's thinner helmet stripe. The stripe remained for the rest of the season. In December of '04, Vol great Reggie White passed away and the Vols wore this special decal on the back of the helmet in his honor for the 2005 Cotton Bowl vs Texas A&M
