Coach Fulmer served as an assistant to Johnny Majors from 1980 until he was officially named head coach following the '92 regular season. He filled in for 4 games that year while Majors underwent heart surgery.

Tension was high between Majors and Fulmer the week of the Memphis St. game in '92, when Majors was officially ousted. Fulmer's 1st official game as head coach was against Boston College in the Hall of Fame Bowl later that year, a 38-23 victory.
