John Barnhill was named head coach in 1941 when General Neyland was called to WWII. Barnhill lettered under The General in '25, '26 and was a captain of the '27 team.
He compiled an outstanding record while coaching the Vols and accepted the Arkansas job in '46 when Neyland returned. He served as athletic director for Arkansas as well and the Hogs basketball arena, Barnhill Arena, is named after him.
