Tennessee 28 - Alabama 27

Ocotber 20, 1984 at Knoxville

A classic battle in a classic series. The Vols trailed 27-13 midway in the 4th quarter, before Tony Robinson led the Vols to two scores and scored the game-winner himself on a two-point conversion.

The Tide had things going its own way most of the day, utilizing a solid ground attack and an occasional pass to keep the Vols off guard. It was 27-13 and things were looking bleak for the Big Orange when William Howard somehow converted a 4th and 4 situation near midfield and Robinson hit Tim McGee in the left corner of the North endzone for the score, cutting the lead to 27-20.

The Vol defense held and forced the Alabama punt. Freshman defensive back Andre Creamer etched his name in the Vol-Tide record books with a 50-yard punt return inside the Tide 20 with just over a minute left. Jones scored a few plays later and it was 27-26. The Vols went for the two-pointer and Robinson made it count, running the option right and cutting inside to reach the promised land. Tommy Sim's interception sealed the Vols win.
